Waubonsee Community College Water Career Program
Waubonsee Community College was awarded a $350,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant to explore a new water and wastewater treatment program. The project, called “Waubonsee Water Ways: Building Pathways to Careers in the Water Sector,” aims to address the current and emergent workforce needs in the water sector, both nationally and in northern Illinois.
IWEA has committed to supporting this program by providing tours and speakers for this program and others like it to help attract students to the water sector. Christina Smith, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion chair, has a real passion for connecting with students and has been instrumental in connecting IWEA with Waubonsee and other student related programs but we are looking for volunteers to oversee this initiative and others like it. Contact ExecMgr@iweasite.org if interested.

Meeting OneWater Objectives with Integrated Planning |
August's Lunch & Learn will provide a brief overview of OneWater and integrated planning including case studies on integrated planning.
The gap in municipal water infrastructure needs and available funding remains significant across wastewater, stormwater, and drinking water. It can be difficult for utilities to prioritize capital improvements because of the long-standing silos that exist at the local, state, and federal levels due to implementation of the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act. Integrated planning assists all three utilities in establishing a shared vision, prioritizing environmental mandates, and adaptively managing assets to provide the greatest environmental and public health benefits.
Presenter: Adrienne Nemura, P.E.
Adrienne is a principal at Geosyntec Consultants, specializing in Clean Water Act compliance for 39 years. She is Chair of the Water Environment Federation’s Integrated Planning Task Force and a technical advisor to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Water Council, and supported the Water Council in the discussions with EPA and Department of Justice about the need for integrated planning. Adrienne has assisted numerous communities with sewer overflow abatement plans and integrated plans and was the principal investigator on development of a Users’ Guide for integrated planning for The Water Research Foundation.

Please join us on Friday, August 16th for a Poo & Brew Workshop and Networking Event hosted at the Terrence J. O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant (OWRP). OWRP operates the world’s largest ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facility for a wastewater treatment plant. Capable of treating 450 MGD, the UV disinfection facility protects the health of the North Shore Channel ecosystem and provides a safer environment for the public to enjoy their local waterways. The OWRP is also home to a number of ongoing research projects being conducted by both MWRD staff and external partners, including projects led by Northwestern PhD candidate Emma Shapiro and MWRD Environmental Research Technician Charles Impastato.
At this workshop, attendees will learn how the OWRP developed and operate their UV disinfection and hear updates on the research taking place at the facility. The program starts at 11:00 am and includes lunch and a facility tour, followed by a networking event at Sketchbook Brewery at 3:00 pm. Registration is free for attendees thanks to the generosity of Peterson and Matz and Trojan Technologies. |
