Title: Using the Child Abuse Library Online (CALiO™)-Finding Research to Support Practice

Presenter: Muriel K. Wells, MEd, MLIS

Description: The Child Abuse Library Online (CALiO™) was established in 2004 to address a gap in child abuse professionals’ access to high-quality research needed to inform the multidisciplinary, coordinated response to child maltreatment. Over the past 20 years, CALiO™ has evolved from a small in-house resource into a globally recognized hub accessed by child maltreatment professionals and researchers worldwide. By providing evidence-based research, CALiO™ has significantly enhanced professionals’ ability to deliver direct services to child victims of maltreatment and their families, including investigations, forensic interviews, medical examinations, mental health therapy, prosecution, advocacy, and more. Beyond direct-service delivery, CALiO™ also supports strengthening program development by providing the research needed to advance and sustain the work of child abuse professionals. This session will provide guidance and demonstration on conducting efficient and effective searches of the literature through CALiO™ that also apply to other research and bibliographic databases. Learn how to reduce your time and increase your productivity by searching like a pro.

Title: Fostering Success: Holistic Support for College-Bound Foster Youth

Presenter: Sharva Yvette Hampton-Campbell, EdD, LSW

Description: This presentation proposes an in-depth exploration of the challenges faced by foster youth pursuing higher education, with a central focus on their academic, social, and emotional well-being. I will highlight the critical need for a comprehensive support system that goes beyond academics, addressing the unique hurdles faced by this demographic. Drawing on research, case studies, and successful intervention models, the presentation will provide practical strategies for institutions and communities to implement. I hope to inspire collaboration and commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that empowers foster youth to thrive academically and personally.

Description:
Child forensic interviews often provide key evidence to guide further investigation and to support decisions made about whether to pursue criminal prosecutions in cases involving maltreatment, exploitation, or exposure to violence, as well as civil child protection interventions. Consequently, many professionals have an interest in how these interviews are conducted and can benefit from an understanding of best practices in child forensic interviewing. This knowledge-based training will provide an overview of foundational principles and basic concepts for any professional who wishes to learn about current best practices in child forensic interviewing and APSAC’s 2023 Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children.

Presenters: Patti Toth, JD & Liz Ghilardi, MSW, LCSW
