5:30 – 6:30 pm: CE Course: The Overlooked Side of HIPAA: IT Controls, AI Risks & Practice Protection with John Siggard (Cope Pending)
This course examines the often-overlooked technical requirements of the HIPAA Security Rule and their practical application within optometric practices. While HIPAA is frequently discussed in terms of policies and privacy, this session focuses on the IT safeguards required to protect electronic protected health information (ePHI), including risk assessments, access controls, encryption, audit logging, and vendor management.
The course will also explore how emerging artificial intelligence (AI) tools introduce new compliance and cybersecurity risks, particularly when handling patient data. Participants will review how AI usage intersects with HIPAA requirements, national cybersecurity standards such as NIST, and common vulnerabilities within small healthcare practices.
Attendees will gain practical, business-focused strategies to strengthen technical safeguards, reduce breach risk, and improve compliance posture without disrupting clinical operations.
