Electrical FAQ (Questions Other People Asked – So You Don’t Have To!)
Travis Moore, PE, Design Center Manager, HDR Engineering, Inc.
At times the electrical systems found in wastewater and water treatment facilities may seem shrouded in mystery.  You know electricity is necessary to make the machinery and treatment processes in your facility work their magic – but what’s in all of those gray boxes, anyway, and how does it all work?
This session will demystify at least a few questions that are commonly asked about those mysterious gray boxes and their inner workings, including: What exactly is the difference between power and energy? What’s the difference between low-voltage and medium-voltage? What does “explosion-proof” mean? Why is my electrical room so big/small? Why is my major electrical gear only running at 20% of its capacity?

Preparing for CDPHE Compliance Evaluation Inspections
David Kurz, Lead Wastewater Engineer, Water Quality Control Division, CDPHE-WQCD
Keeping the streams and rivers clean for everyone is largely dependent on good wastewater treatment and the self-monitoring program developed under the Clean Water Act. Preparing for your wastewater compliance evaluation inspection is more than a one-time event. Consistent implementation of the self-monitoring program allows you to document your good treatment. Understand the requirements of your discharge permit to feel confident leading up to your next inspection.

Enhanced Phosphorus Removal, Recovery and Sludge Dewaterability Optimization
Jerod Swanson, Western Regional Sales Manager, Centrisys/CNP
This presentation will evaluate the costs and benefits of removing orthophosphate and improving dewaterability of digested sludge by post-digestion AirPrex® struvite mediation technology. AirPrex pilot tests in the U.S. and long-term installations in Europe have demonstrated improvement of sludge dewaterability with reduction of polymer dosage by 10-15%, and improvement of dry cake solids by 3-5% points. Cost and benefit analysis showed that typical payback years are between 8 – 10 years. Reducing the formation of struvite in the biosolids process can have major benefits, including: dewatering improvement, hauling cost reduction, polymer reduction, maintenance and cleaning cost reduction, and savings on FeCl3 dosing.

 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
How Activated is Your Sludge?
Ron Schuyler, COWAC
Based in Colorado, but widely respected nationally and beyond, Ron Schuyler will discuss operational focus on running the Specific Oxygen Uptake Test and its variations to identify: how well the process is activating the sludge, how long it takes in the aeration tank to activate the sludge, and the effects of MCRT, sludge return rate, and environmental conditions on activation of the sludge.

Our Future as Clean Water Professionals, Part Two
Steve Walker, Operations Assistance Group Leader, Carollo Engineers, Inc.
The skills that clean water professionals use daily are changing with rising expectations. Just as the lack of certain skills impedes our abilities to effectively complete our work, habits and behaviors can also hold us back. In this open group session, we will explore how to overcome detrimental habits and behaviors that can negatively affect our work.

Blower Controls and Selection: Boosting Conservation & Efficiency for Wastewater Treatment Facilities
Bob Kisler, Regional Manager, Gardner-Denver Hoffman & Lamson
High power usage, rising costs, and external pressures to boost conservation and efficiency are pushing wastewater treatment facilities to find innovative solutions to reduce overall power consumption. Two main methods that offer solutions for reducing energy demand will be explored. (1) Selecting the correct blower technology for the right installation and assembling the required ancillary equipment necessary for the job. (2) Proven installation and operational techniques for VFD speed control in existing centrifugal blower installations.

“Clean & Dirty” Online Process Instrumentation 101
Sean Lynch, Ambiente H2O Inc.
As facilities continue to move to understand more about real-time process data, there are many benefits for operators to have a basic understanding of all types of process instrumentation for wastewater and water treatment facilities. Sean will cover the benefits of inline process instrumentation from the beginning, to the end of a typical treatment facility, and use local installation examples to help explain the advantages of each instrument included in the discussion.
